First Person
1) Carol Gerdum- Owner of Gainesville Parking Operations.
2) Domain Expert
3) I was able to find the phone number of the company online and proceeded to get the address of their office. I went in, explained my assignment, and then asked to schedule a meeting with Mrs. Gerdum.
4) I was able to meet with Mrs. Gerdum and explain the idea I had with her. She also got to explain to me how she was able to start up her business and open various parking garages. She gave me various pointers on the hardest parts of her business while also encouraging the expectation that I always put customers first regardless of the business I am in.
5) Meeting Mrs. Gerdum allowed me to have a greater insight on what is important in this business and added an individual willing to help throughout the start up process.
Second Person
1) Diego Gonzales- Owner of Gator Scooter Repair.
2) Supplier
3) I have had my scooter repaired many times by Diego and had the discussion of parking around campus with him. I called him and asked to stop by his shop and show him my elevator pitch. He agreed to meet with me.
4) I asked Diego to listen and give pointers on my elevator pitch and promised that he'd be the only person I'd ever get my scooter repaired from in exchange. He was more than willing to help but offering him the promise seemed to help our relationship.
5) Due to working and building scooters for hundreds of students in Gainesville, Diego would be a great individual to encourage the use of the parking spaces I would be providing.
Third Person
1) Zackaria Saadioui- Developer of parking app called SpotHero.
2) Expert on my Market
3) I had a class with this individual who was working on an app that could help you locate available parking spaces near you and provide directions to get to them. I reached out to him and ended up talking to him for over thirty minutes and giving him my elevator speech as well.
4) I asked Zackaria to listen to my idea and tell me what he though about it and if he could give me some constrictive feedback then I would refer his app to as many friends that I know.
5) This person is developing an app that could feature my spaces making it much easier to guarantee their consistent use.
Final Reflection
I This assignment made me realize that when networking it is much more effective to make some thing worth both sides time. If I were to go and just demand some of these individuals time then they most likely wouldn't have cared half as much. I was able to offer something that interested them in a non-aggressive way and that seemed to draw their attention in. That is something that definitely made this assignment stand out and I will definitely keep it in mind future endeavors.
Robert,
ReplyDeleteI have found that a great way to get experts to share their knowledge with you is to start by offering knowledge and then asking for their thoughts. This way you show you have brought something to offer first. Most people want before they give. Then follow their offer with an offer, this leaves them feeling a little indebted in a good way. This helps them to not feel used and keeps them engaged.

Hey Robert,
ReplyDeleteIt seems as if you had success in finding really valuable people to have conversations with. I also found that offering an individual something in return gives the conversation a new sense of depth and knowledge for they are more intrigued by your presence. Having this first hand experience now will surely be beneficial to us all in our future endeavors.
Thanks,
Michelle
