Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Two Economic Opportunities

1. Paid Leave Bills Introduced in Congress
a. Source: https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7671-regulatory-issues-changes.html
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: Bills to make paid leave mandatory at jobs have been introduced into congress providing the opportunity of more comfortable work places and minimizing stress on workers.
c. Prototypical customer: Any worker in the United States
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This would be a nation-wide law being passed so I wouldn't necessarily be easy to achieve, however, the bill has already been introduced so there is momentum in a positive direction.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: I have seen my mom have to deal with this issue and miss important family events due to not being offered paid leave. If this opportunity were achieve I know that this would be much easier on her and she would feel more comfortable at her job.

2. Offering a Course on Managing Personal Finances
 a. Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/05/northwestern-mutual-how-many-americans-say-theyll-always-be-in-debt.html
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: This article describes how currently more than one in ten Americans say they will be debt for the rest of their lives. It isn't entirely the case but a portion of this reflects the way some Americans handle their personal finances. This lack of knowledge could be fixed with a course that teaches individuals how to as responsible as possible with how they are managing the way they spend money.
c. Prototypical customer: The prototypical customer would be any American interested in how to responsibly manage their funds.
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This would require the necessary knowledge to teach these individuals, which I currently do not have. This would make it very difficult for myself if I were to be working on this alone.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: As a student I haven't had the opportunity to learn about some very important financial topics such as loans and running my own budget. While it doesn't directly affect me now I know that it will eventually be very important yet I don't feel prepared at all. A course would definitely be useful to me.

Two Regulatory Opportunities

1. Increase of Visitors in Gainesville
 a. Source: http://news.ufl.edu/articles/2018/09/uf-rises-to-no-8-in-us-news-list-of-best-public-universities.php
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: This appears to me as an opportunity because with the University of Florida rising in ranks in this manner I can assume that it will lead to more nation-wide attention on the school meaning more people visiting Gainesville. Keeping that in mind it could potentially mean a need for a place to stay.
c. Prototypical customer: A prototypical customer would be any incoming families and potential students visiting Gainesville for a tour.
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? It would be a lot of work due to finding the land and having the initial funds to invest in the opportunity, however, I believe the payoff could make it worth it.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunityAs a current student in Gainesville I can see the improvements occurring not only in the school but also this town as well. This will certainly bring more attention and potentially more people.

2. Marijuana Business Opportunity
a. Source: https://mjbizdaily.com/us-cannabis-listings-in-canada-rise-as-investor-interest-spikes/
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: The use of marijuana has been gaining a lot of attention and this article describes an increase in investors due to the possibility of nation-wide legalization. Whether for medical or recreational use, the canabis industry is a great opportunity to be involved in in case it did become available.
c. Prototypical customer: Any citizen looking to use marijuana
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This requires laws to be passed in Florida to legalize marijuana making this a difficult opportunity to exploit.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: I have witnessed people using this substance illegally and have also seen people legally use it for medical use which shows me that there is a demand for it in a wide group of people. It has also been getting a lot of attention and seems to be moving towards legalization across the country.

  1. Hello Rob,

I believe your first Economic Opportunity, “Paid Leave Bills introduced in Congress”, should be under regulatory opportunities. I also must disagree that it would be easy to exploit. It is not easy to pass anything in the congress. However, if it were to be passed the only ones benefiting would be lawyers. There is already FMLA, Family Medical Leave Act, to help protect employment for family medical issues. I do not know any company that does not allow their employee to take off time. The issue I see at my place of work is the abuse of time off and then when they really need time off they have none to use. It is also a challenge the decide how much time, when they can use it and how long at a time they can take off.
I agree that personal finances is an area that many need help, but from my experience it is very difficult to get people to ask for and accept help. I think you got number 1 from each section in the wrong place.

  2. I enjoyed your two regulatory change post but the one on the medical marijuana post was my favorite. This is a growing opportunity across the states and I believe that we will continue to see more and more states legalizing it. I also agree that this opportunity won’t be easy to exploit but issues like this don't just change overnight. I will be keeping my eye out on the different regulatory changes on this topic because it has also become a big issue in sports and with professional athletes.

  3. Hey Rob,

The opportunity about the personal finance class is an opportunity I 100% agree with. As college students we are entering the world and learning how to take care of ourselves. Having a budget is something always overlook and some wonder why they don't have enough money to pay their bills. I feel UF students can really benefit from taking a course about personal finances.

  4. Hey Rob,

My favorite opportunity of yours was the one regarding a course on managing personal finances. I really do think students need to stop spending so much time learning subjects they will never use outside of high school and start focusing on life skills that will provide them a foundation to create a successful future for themselves.

    Thanks for sharing your opportunities!
