Venture Concept for Gainesville Parking House #2

1.

Opportunity
The different students that regularly drive scooters across the University of Florida campus have expressed their complaints towards the difficulty of finding parking spaces near the more popular locations. Students are spending up to hours looking for spots and are looking for a solution to the struggle of going on campus with a scooter at all. As construction in the city of Gainesville increases, open plots of land around the town are becoming less and less common which leads to this great opportunity. There is a relatively large, single plot of land across one of the most popular locations on campus that will not be available for very long. This provides a space for off-campus parking in a location that could great benefit students and whoever starts it up. Demographically, this location is perfect for targeting students and encouraging a fast, stress-free opportunity to park and get on to campus.

Innovation
The creation will be the Gaineville Parking House (GPH). This will be a 3-4 story parking garage that will provide approximately 20 car parking spaces and 100 scooter parking spaces. This land will be purchased for approximately $200,000. We will gain this money back by selling $5 parking per hour, $25 per day, $150 per week, $500 per month, and then an annual parking pass for $1,000. It will take a bit of time to gain profit but within five years it should be all profit. Once the cost of buying and building the land and building has been regained, the remaining money will be profit that can go into maintaining the building and potentially expanding in the future. Most of the money gained  would go into maintaining a clean parking garage and providing a designated personally parking space in one of the best locations near the University of Florida.

Venture Concept
Currently one of the only parking options on or near the University of Florida is the on-campus parking that most students find frustrating. The few spaces offered on campus are, for the most part, the only competitors close enough for students to consider parking in to get on to campus.  For this reason, I believe it will be a quick purchase for many students and will require minimal convincing in doing so. This is due to the idea that many students often find themselves late to class or even just missing out on events due to not having the option of a quick and easily-accessible parking space. This strong focus on academics and on-campus involvement in Gainesville will encourage a lot of individuals to partake in GPH regardless of the cost. The prices are relatively high, however, the location and ease of access provided seems to make the price adequate. The costs would come down to 3 to 4 different security guards that would rotate shifts in manning the entrance booth, and 4 to 5 janitors that would rotate in keeping the building in a clean state.

The location of the GPH is the most notable advantage the parking garage has over all other competitors. This resource is what will convince individuals to park there simply because of how easy it would make it to get onto campus. With close to no other options of land to build a parking garage on anywhere near as close to campus, it will be nearly impossible for competitors to have a similar situation.

The next venture I'd like to tackle is a different parking garage on the more popular parts of the opposite side of the campus and then potentially moving on to other schools with similar situations.

In the next five years, I hope to have several more successful parking garages across the state in locations where they are needed. In ten years, however, I hope to have successful parking garages across the world in locations where I believe they will thrive, while having enough money to be able to take risks in where I start opening them.

(2-3).
In the feedback students basically expressed how some of the calculated numbers might be misleading and inaccurate. I did some more research and revised the numbers I had previously. The numbers added are much more realistic and provide a better understanding of the goals I plan to achieve. The comments helped me realize how important it is to pay attention to smaller details.

Final Reflection

After looking through all of the blog posts I have submitted the one experience that really stood out to me was the assignment in which I had to go and meet up with a professional in the field my venture was in. This was very unique to me because it was the hands on experience that I had been waiting for a class to provide me with. I felt uncomfortable at first when going to meet with them but it assured me of actual progress towards being an entrepreneur after I came out of the interview.

After experiences such as this one,I truly do see myself as an entrepreneur or at least having more of a mindset like one. I feel as though I have a better understanding towards what it takes to be an entrepreneur including the risks and rewards it entails. The books I read also really helped open my eyes to the point of views of other renowned entrepreneur and influenced my mentality in a very positive way.

If I could give advice to a future student joining this class I would tell them to tackle each assignment with a commitment to learn and apply the concepts learned towards the vision they have of themselves professionally. I found it very motivating to learn something new and to think of ways it could be applied to my intended future endeavors. For success in the class I would strongly encourage staying on schedule with assignments and always watching lectures as soon as they are released in the case they aren't going in person.

Exit Strategy

1) The business I have created is intended to only grow in value as things become more and more crowded in the surrounded area, yet, I do intend to sell it at the right time. This plot of land alone will draw a lot of attention and I believe that in twenty years I will be ready to sell the business entirely and with that the land.

2) The surrounding area to the plot of land I have intended is already very crowded, however, In twenty years I expect it to be much worse. It will certainly be at a point in which building any more parking lots will be completely out of the question. This would drive up the business of a parking lot not only for students but also for people trying get to the buildings I expect to be there. I believe that the land alone would be worth a lot but I would want to sell the business entirely.

3) I believe that the desire to pick a location that would thrive so well throughout the years and also gain value over time was directly influenced by my exit strategy. I saw the available lot and realized it's potential in the town's current situation but also what it could mean for me if I were to have a business revolving around it. It has led me intentions towards keeping it a thriving lot while everything around it develops and brings in more customers.

Celebrating Failure

This semester I decided I would start taking soccer more seriously again and set a goal for myself. I set tape in goals making right triangles at each corner and proceeded to take free kicks from 20 yards out. I decided that by the end of the semester I would be able to score ten out of ten goals in one of the corners. I started going three days a week and in the first two weeks I would average around four goals out of each set of ten. It was a horrible start and very discouraging but after doing research and practicing more and more I started raising that number. By the fourth week I was scoring between five and six goals every ten. This small improvement definitely helped give me more confidence. It was two months later when I finally scored ten out of ten. This was very exciting for me, however, It still wasn't consistently ten out f ten every time. It took another two weeks til almost every shot was hitting a corner.

This experience taught me something that I had heard before but never actually practiced. This really demonstrated that practice really pays off and that failure is a part of the process of succeeding. Every time that I failed I was able to evaluate myself and and make improvements that led to my overall success.

I wouldn't say that I handle failure poorly, however, there are many times in which I feel very discouraged by my failures and that discouragement makes it much harder to see the big picture. In general I am able to understand that it is ok to fail every once and a while but that doesn't stop me from being discouraged. This class has allowed me to be much more comfortable with the idea of failing when I am trying to improve in something. It has opened me up to the idea of risks and allowed me to see that sometimes it is worth risking some things even if it can potentially lead to a failure.

Reading Reflection

I decided to read the book Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky and found it to be very insightful on some important points for being a successful entrepreneur. It mostly made me question how I have and should be spending my free time. This book points out how things are changing in terms of how people are spending so much free time from things such as television towards social media and other forms of communication online. What stood out to me and surprised me most was the way Shirky emphasized the benefits of this change and made social media appear as such a positive outlet for this generation. I have always looked at it negatively but this book was able to highlight the ways it is a much better use of free time compared to other things like staring at a television. The way the book made me change my mind truly made me admire Shirky's opinion. This book connected with several points that we have been working towards in this class. One of the things we have discussed is spending time efficiently and this book definitely talks that over. It also focuses on interaction and finding opportunities through the best means available such as social media in many of the cases in the book.

If I were to design an assignment for this course that has to do with the concepts in this book I would create an assignment called "My Free-time evaluation". In this assignment I'd firstly ask students to write down a list of the five things they do most on their free time. After this they would evaluate if or how these activities benefit them professionally or in identifying opportunities. The third step would be to determine how they could use these activities in developing or creating current or future opportunities.

I think that my biggest surprise in this book was the part where he mentioned the need to be aggressive in posting to gain attention. He describes that sometimes upsetting people is the best way to gain attention while using social media.

What's Next?

Existing Market

When discussing the things that should be taken into consideration currently, two of the three that I interviewed discussed the development of the land and construction that would be needed before ever truly making any profit. I have been focusing so much on the final product that I hadn't considered the initial investment, necessary work, and time that would be required before ever being successfully functioning. One of the people I interviewed told me that her dad was in construction and that to build anything at all, the land that I intended to use would need to be inspected and then prepared for construction. They all expressed that a lot of students on campus would be waiting for nothing more than an open, functioning parking garage.

Other than the physical construction, one of the individuals that I interviewed expressed that a greater focus on advertisement should be a large priority. I hadn't considered this aspect and was quick to agree that while it wasn't something I had planned on, it certainly was very important. Without advertising, the building would definitely still draw in attention due to its location, however, the use of social media, flyers, and pamphlets sent through mail would all likely increase anticipation of the building while it is in construction.

New Market

The entire time I have worked on this project I have had the intention of it being for students, however when thinking in terms of another market, it can also be beneficial for Gainesville locals and others simply visiting the town. When talking to my boss who grew up in Gainesville, she explained that many visitors in town would be willing to park their cars in the parking garage for several nights. She told me that a great way to modify what I had previously to encourage that group to use the parking garage would be to offer specials on special weekends such as labor day weekend. I found this to be a very helpful idea and have greatly taken it into consideration.

I was very eager to give this new market a shot and truly do believe that it can contribute to the parking house. I found it fascinating to hear from the second individual I interviewed about all of the people that end up visiting town and even the locals that need places to park when visiting mid town. While I believe that this market can be beneficial to my cause, it still doesn't end up nearly as attractive as my existing market. I expect that students will be using the building regularly as opposed to weekends or for occasional visits to mid town.

Unfair Advantage

Resources

1) The Location is very close to campus.
2) The plot of land intended is much larger than other available land in the area.
3) I am currently a student at the University of Florida.
4) The University of Florida would likely support it.
5) I have been in contact with individuals with experience in this field.
6) I know a lot of individuals that would use parking spaces.
7) There will always be students coming in to use the spaces.
8) I will provide parking spaces for cars as well.
9)I have owned and ridden a scooter for several years on campus.
10) I am very knowledgeable of the area around the lot.

"VRIN" Analysis

1) The location near campus is what will lead students to want to park there. This is rare because there aren't many parking options near campus. There aren't any other available plots of land this close to campus making this location currently inimitable and non-substitutable.
2) This allows me to provide more parking spaces than any possible competitors. Due to a lack of available land in the area, this makes the size of the plot rare. It would be very hard to copy this because of how rare a plot of this size in such a good location is. No other parking options in the area provide the same size.
3) This is valuable because it means I have an insight on the individuals that would be using the parking. This is rare because it isn't often when a student is able to work with his peers on such a business. It is relatively hard to copy because it would take being one of the 35,000 students that attend this school along with having the land.
4) Many students would feel more comfortable using a parking space endorsed by UF. This is uncommon because it isn't often that the university partners with off-campus parking locations. This would only occur if it were in a location that the university found to very helpful to the students such as the one I have found. This leads to it being inimitable and non-substitutable.
5) This allows me to have access to knowledge that could allow me to thrive in this business. This is not very common for an individual of my age because of a typical lack of access to such professionals. This is hard to copy because it takes a lot of reaching out and going out of ones way to gain such a relationship.
6) This would mean more individuals in college inclined to use my parking over others. This is uncommon for most professionals not in a college. This is hard to imitate without being a social, out-going individual in college. Without personal connections, it is hard to form such loyal customers.
7) By being associated with the university, the parking lot will always have customers transitioning in and out of the school. This is rare because many places don't have such a consistent group they can rely on. This is hard to copy because most places don't have as many reasons to bring in so many new customers. Other things may be able to but not well as the steady income going into the school each year.
8) This will add a new group of customers that strictly scooter parking lots can not offer. It is often times rare for off-campus parking lots to offer scooter and car parking. This can be hard to copy without the necessary space. Other parking lots similar to mine to exist.
9) This allows me to understand my customers better. It takes personal experience to understand the industry better and that is often rare. This can be replicated through any individual with a scooter. Proper research can also provide good insight.
10) This allows me to offer information to customers and understand those using the spaces better. This takes experience living and maneuvering through Gainesville, which many individuals do not have. Only having lived here can truly provide the knowledge of the area.

Top Resource

My top resource appears to be the location of the parking lot. This is the top one because it will be the main reason students will chose to park on my lot as opposed to the others that are located further from campus. The location will facilitate getting on campus faster and convince many to choose to park there.

Elevator Pitch 3

1) Elevator Pitch #3

2) It was expressed to me that I should be more clear in my speech so I tried to enunciate my words better this time around. Some feedback said that some of my statistics were irrelevant so I took it into cosideration, however, I didn't necessarily agree with it.

3) I worked on being clearer in my speech and cutting back on information that wasn't exactly necessary. I also was more direct with my idea and spent less time explaining small details. I also found myself more confident in my idea leading to me being more confident in my delivery in front of the camera.

Reading Reflection #2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
- The general theme of the book was about the emphasis on how important and valuable failing is to successful individuals. The book describes how it often takes failing over and over again without giving up to finally come out with the desired outcome and growing from the experience. It also talks about how life being so unpredictable leads to some of these failures but that that is part of the learning process and often times leads to winning big.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
-The main way I saw this book relate to topics in this course was in the development of our ideas in this course. It has been made very clear in the course that many ideas could use improving and feedback to improve in general. Without all of the development of our ideas, most of our initial ideas would most likely fail, yet it would teach us that more work could've been put into developing them. The book heavily focuses on the value behind such failures.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
- I have noticed that one of the best ways to really understand a concept in this class is applying it to things in my life. My assignment would be called "The Importance of Failing". In this assignment I would ask students to write down three times they failed in something, how they reacted to it, and if/what they learned from it. This would allow them to understand the concept that failing can be beneficial by applying it to personal experiences.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
-My biggest 'aha' moment was looking over all of the people that initially failed and realizing how many incredibly successful individuals I recognized. I could've never expected any form of failure from some of those named.

Social Capital

First Person
1) Carol Gerdum- Owner of Gainesville Parking Operations.
2) Domain Expert
3) I was able to find the phone number of the company online and proceeded to get the address of their office. I went in, explained my assignment, and then asked to schedule a meeting with Mrs. Gerdum.
4) I was able to meet with Mrs. Gerdum and explain the idea I had with her. She also got to explain to me how she was able to start up her business and open various parking garages. She gave me various pointers on the hardest parts of her business while also encouraging the expectation that I always put customers first regardless of the business I am in.
5) Meeting Mrs. Gerdum allowed me to have a greater insight on what is important in this business and added an individual willing to help throughout the start up process.

Second Person
1) Diego Gonzales- Owner of Gator Scooter Repair.
2) Supplier
3) I have had my scooter repaired many times by Diego and had the discussion of parking around campus with him. I called him and asked to stop by his shop and show him my elevator pitch. He agreed to meet with me.
4) I asked Diego to listen and give pointers on my elevator pitch and promised that he'd be the only person I'd ever get my scooter repaired from in exchange. He was more than willing to help but offering him the promise seemed to help our relationship.
5) Due to working and building scooters for hundreds of students in Gainesville, Diego would be a great individual to encourage the use of the parking spaces I would be providing.

Third Person
1) Zackaria Saadioui- Developer of parking app called SpotHero.
2) Expert on my Market
3) I had a class with this individual who was working on an app that could help you locate available parking spaces near you and provide directions to get to them. I reached out to him and ended up talking to him for over thirty minutes and giving him my elevator speech as well.
4) I asked Zackaria to listen to my idea and tell me what he though about it and if he could give me some constrictive feedback then I would refer his app to as many friends that I know.
5) This person is developing an app that could feature my spaces making it much easier to guarantee their consistent use.

Final Reflection
I This assignment made me realize that when networking it is much more effective to make some thing worth both sides time. If I were to go and just demand some of these individuals time then they most likely wouldn't have cared half as much. I was able to offer something that interested them in a non-aggressive way and that seemed to draw their attention in. That is something that definitely made this assignment stand out and I will definitely keep it in mind future endeavors.

Idea Napkin No. 2

You: I am currently a junior at the University of Florida and have had plenty of experience with the scooter parking situation on campus. I would like to consider myself an outgoing individual with a decent amount of involvement on campus that has allowed me to gain even more insight on this topic. If I were to create this parking area I know that it would greatly benefit me by providing me with much greater access to my classes and reducing stress in the overall task of getting on campus.

What are you offering to customers? My service is providing a location for University of Florida students to park their vehicles in some of the most useful and convenient locations near campus.

Who are you offering it to? I am offering this service to the University of Florida Students that use their scooters or cars to get to the west side of campus.

Why do they care? Customers care and will use this service because it is currently almost impossible to find parking on this side of campus. In not being able to find parking students are often late to class or where ever they need to get to wherever they need to get to on campus. This leads to a lot of stress on students all over campus.

What are your core competencies? What I am offering is parking in an are where it is for the most part not offered or available elsewhere. I would be taking basically the only available space in the area and using it in a way that isn't offered any where else in the area.

After the revisions I made and reviewing everything I have written I have realized that some of the elements that I didn't believe fit together now seem to do. Some of the weaker points seem to be the location of the parking area, the initial funds necessary to start the project, and arranging the parking spaces. Apart from those things that can be established over time, everything seems to work together.

The two main points I received from the feedback was expanding my targeted customers and elaborating more on explaining the concept itself. I was able to expand my customers by adding on parking availability to cars thanks to one of the comments questioning the availability. I also was able to elaborate more on what exactly I was providing by explaining in greater detail how this will be the much needed parking option in popular areas where there is none. These points have definitely allowed me to refine my vision for the overall project.

Elevator Pitch

1)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDez9GtoBtU&t=20s

2) People told me I needed more facts and needed to be more clear in my delivery. The facts idea was the most constructive.

3) I spoke more clearly to get my message across better and added more facts about my cause.

Customer Avatar

My avatar is a male, 20-year-old University of Florida student that has classes five days a week and drives his scooter to every single one of them. He may be only 20 years old, however the large amount of responsibilities he has taken on has made him mature a lot more over the last few years. His classes range from nine in the morning to three in the afternoon everyday and a majority of them are in Turlington Plaza and around Library West. He dedicates a lot of time to the University of Florida Cicerones that require giving tours on campus and playing on the UF water polo team which requires getting to the University of Florida Student Rec building daily. He spends a lot of his time studying at Library West and being involved in organizations on campus. He relies heavily on his Phoenix Pro white scooter to get around town and is consistently seen on it throughout most days. He is so busy that he hardly has any time for much else apart from his commitments. He wishes he had more time for art and literature, however, his main focuses at the moment are on developing himself as a professional as efficiently as possible.

I do have a few things in common with the avatar such as spending a great deal of time studying at library West and in the Turlington area. I also am invested in developing professionally above most other things in my life and also use a scooter to get around campus. I don't believe this is a coincidence because it appears to be far easier to determine an issue through personal experience. I'm sure I subconsciously found this opportunity through issues I have faced and the avatar seems to represent my position relatively well.

Buyer Behavior 2

1) The three different people I interviewed were in the ''Greek'' community.

2) In asking these individuals about how they would choose in alternative parking to the limited campus options, they almost all decided separately that the most important factors were the location as in how close to where they needed to be on campus the spots were, and the pricing of parking there would be. Apart from that the safety of their scooters mattered but that didn't seem to be much of an issue in most places.

3) These individuals are definitely more likely and comfortable paying online through a debit or credit card in which there isn't a necessity to visit a location in person to complete the transaction. According to some of the individuals I spoke to, this option would greatly benefit their ability to succeed in school which led them to believe that their parents would be willing to pay for it. The ability to pay online would make this option much easier.

4) A big thing that encouraged these individuals to want to purchase a parking spot and view it as a "right" purchase, was the fact that it would facilitate getting on campus and to class on time. This then led them to believe an improvement in grades and involvement. If the distance was far enough to believe that it wouldn't help them academically then it would most likely be viewed as a bad idea.

5) The first person I spoke to was my friend Frieda who is in a sorority here at the University of Florida. She had spoken about the troubles parking on campus had caused her previously. She explained that any alternative near campus would be incredibly valuable to her, yet there was currently no options. I also spoke to my good friend Mitch in a fraternity on campus. He explained to me that near where his house was there were plenty of spots but when you moved towards the more popular areas things got much worse. He said that he had explained this issue to his parents and that they would be more than willing to pay for a parking spot that would help him make it to class on time. The third person I spoke to was Michelle who is also in a sorority off campus. She told me she almost never goes on campus with this scooter other than class because of the parking issues. She explained how surprised she was that no one had already made an alternative to campus parking and expressed how necessary it was that someone do something about it. She assured me that she would be one of the first customers if it were created.

6) Through the interviews I conducted and speaking to others, it appears this segment is eager for a parking alternative and would be willing and able to pay for the available spots. It would be considered a valuable purchase due to the way this segment would see it as benefiting them academically.

Tenacity

1) Some of the behaviors I have used through out this course are organization, dedication, and punctuality. I have to stay organized in maintaining my blog, assignments, lectures, and readings throughout the week. The dedication comes in completing the weekly assignments according to all of their requirements. I have used my punctuality in submitting all of the assignments on time.

2) Earlier in the semester I was out of town with my family and felt like giving up on the assignment I had been working on so that I could go out and enjoy the town. That was when I realized that if I gave up on one assignment I'd be defeating the purpose of the entire class. The idea of being an entrepreneur in my eyes has encouraged me to take on these situations without allowing myself to give up. The lectures and books I have been reading have changed my mindset throughout this course and led me to persevere in all of these different assignments.

3) The first tip I would give a future student in fostering the skills that support tenacity would be to make an effort in learning about the habits famous entrepreneurs share. the next two tips would be to imagine yourself as a famous entrepreneurs with strict deadlines on projects. This will keep them on time with all assignments. Thirdly, I'd tell them that one of the most important things in the development of becoming an entrepreneur and in most entrepreneurs is never giving up.

Reading Reflection #1

1. I chose to read the book The Wright Brothers by David McCullough and found it to be incredibly fascinating and very inspirational. What I found to be the most surprising about these entrepreneurs was there great success without legitimate schooling. They were home schooled most of their lives and took in a great deal of their knowledge simply through reading different books. I really admired how they were able to persevere although in the eyes of the public they weren't expected to succeed in much at all. These two men demonstrated that with enough effort and passion they could pull off what no one expected any man to be able to doe least of all the Wright brothers. What I least admired about these entrepreneurs was how little they cared to advertise what they were working on to the public. I find that to be a big part of the creation of a product, yet the brothers were very secretive about what they were working on and hardly allowed anyone to see that could spread word of their project. These two brothers dealt with a great deal of adversity and failure throughput the process of creating their final product. Whether it was the over 900 destroyed prototypes crashing, breaking bones while maneuvering the planes, or losing hundreds of dollars, these men never gave up although faced with many issues along the way.

2. These two men showed an incredible manner of using their available skills to create something incredibly revolutionary. Apart from their relentless perseverance, these men were able to use the mechanical abilities they had learned while working in a bicycle shop and knowledge they had learned to push the limits on what humans believed to be possible.

3. In the book I was very confused on why the brothers were so persistent on the fact that no one take any pictures during their flight simulation. I would expect them to want pictures taken and attention drawn to their product, however, when demonstrating in France it appeared they were willingly choosing to neglect the benefits photography could provide.

4. If I had to ask the two brothers two questions my first would be if there was ever a point where they felt their product wasn't worth the criticism, cost, and effort required. I would ask this because I am sure that many revolutionary entrepreneurs reach a point where their doubts are overwhelming. It takes a lot of passion to go throughout the process without asking if it is worth it all and I'd love to understand their views throughout the process. The next question I'd ask would be asking what kept them going throughout the entire building experience. I'd ask this because it would be very hard to believe that they could go through what they went through without some sort of inspiration motivating them through it.

5. I believe the two brothers deemed hard work worth it if the outcome could change lives for others and revolutionize the way society viewed things. I can agree with the statement, however, I don't believe I have found a cause worthy of such hard work yet.

Sketching out the Beginning of the Buyer Behavior Process

1) The segment a chose to focus on was the "Greek" community due to the number of Greek-involved individuals that use scooters.

2-3) The first individual I interviewed was my friend Trevor who happens to be in a fraternity of this campus. I had already established that he felt that more parking spaces was a necessity so I asked where he felt this issue was most prominent. He told me that parking around Turlington Plaza was impossible but that around Library West was also very difficult. I had heard this reaction before so I asked when he felt it wasn't difficult to find parking. He told me that it was easy to find parking at ridiculous hours such as before 8 A.M or after 12:00 A.M but that that was about it.
The next person I spoke to was my sister Mariana who is in a sorority on campus. I knew she felt it was an issue so I asked when she felt that it wasn't. She answered that the only times of the year that she felt it actually wasn't an issue was during breaks but that it didn't even matter at that point. I asked if there was any specific areas that she felt this problem didn't apply to. She told me that the only acceptable experiences she ever had in regards to scooter parking was near the physics building but that that was it. The next person I spoke to was Johnson, who is the treasurer of the fraternity that I am a part of. After determining that this was a need that he felt was unmet, I asked if there were any situations in which this no longer was an issue. He told me that the only times that it didn't seem to be an issue was when it was raining but that that was only because no one wanted to take their scooters out in the rain. I asked where he felt the issue was most prominent and he told me that Library West was where he had most trouble with scooter parking.

4) I asked each of the individuals I interviewed the processes they each went through in trying to solve the issue. Trevor told me that he has looked up parking alternatives in the area and found nothing near where he needed to be. Mariana told me that she had once gone to the student services building on campus and complained about the issue in search for a solution but that no actions were made in trying to solve the issue. Johnson told me that he had often parked in illegal spots and received tickets for it. apart from that he told me that searching online for parking areas on campus just made him realize how little parking spots there really were in the areas he needed.

5) In these interviews I discovered that the problem of scooter parking does go away in certain conditions, however, these are typically conditions in which no one needs a parking spot. The point that parking is available during poor weather or school breaks doesn't seem to help much because no one is looking for parking spots at those times. The inconvenient times in which the spots are available seems to be the same type of situation. While many have looked for answers, there doesn't seem to be a clear solution so far so these interviews have done nothing but encourage my idea thus far.

6) This is a segment that I believe to be well acquainted on campus and one that tends to fit the customer I'd expect to use my service. In regards to need awareness and information search, I'd say this segment seems to know very well that this service would be useful and is also aware that there are no current alternatives that could help against this problem.

Piecing it All together

You: I am currently a junior at the University of Florida and have had plenty of experience with the scooter parking situation on campus. I would like to consider myself an outgoing individual with a decent amount of involvement on campus that has allowed me to gain even more insight on this topic. If I were to create this parking area I know that it would greatly benefit me by providing me with much greater access to my classes and reducing stress in the overall task of getting on campus.

What are you offering to customers? My service is to provide place for individuals to park their scooters in a very popular area that currently has very limited spaces.

Who are you offering it to? I am offering this service to the University of Florida Students that use their scooters to get to the west side of campus.

I believe all of these all of these different elements only encouraged me more to pursue the idea. It seems to fix an issue that students are willing to pay for in an are that offers close to no competition. It is a solution that students seem to be begging for yet no one has taken the time to fix. Although the group I am targeting is very specific and limited, it seems to be a service that a large portion of this group would want to use.

Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

In the first part of this blog post I described the issue of scooter parking on the University of Florida campus and in this post I will further observe the opportunity that comes through this dilemma. In exploring more about the topic I was able to speak to five separate individuals whom I felt would be on the same page as me on the issue yet expressed different, unexpected views. The first person I spoke to was a friend Ryan who was in his fifth year taking classes and using his scooter here at UF. I asked him how he felt about the parking on campus and he told me he almost never had a problem with it. I was confused because most people said otherwise, however he explained that all of his classes were very early so the timing just seemed to work out. The next person I met was a girl parking her scooter next to Library west named Samantha. I asked how she felt about parking on campus and she explained that she didn't mind or really care because she had Gainesville city parking which allowed her to park on the neighboring city streets and it led to a very short walk to most of her classes. Steve, a good friend of mine that I met in a class last year, Told me he liked how parking was but also admitted that he almost never had to park near the notoriously crowded areas. Michael that approached me in Turlington Plaza about a club brought up scooters so I questioned him about the parking situation. He said that he didn't like it at first but that if you knew all of the hidden, less-popular parking spots then you could get around with a lot of ease. Jess, a freshman at UF, told me that she hated the parking situation when she first arrived but that after a while she started parking a spot that was supposed to be reserved for faculty, yet it hasn't been a problem yet and made things much easier.

WHO: The people that seem to have the problem with scooter parking seem to be University of Florida students that ride their scooters onto the campus, yet some of those people have found ways to get around the issue, whether it's through finding parking in hidden spots or breaking University parking rules.

WHAT: The need for more parking seems to differ based on the times the individuals need to park along with how willing they are to find hidden or illegitimate parking spots.

WHY: I believe that some of the outsiders were willing to risk parking in parking spots that students weren't supposed to park in. Along with that some just happened to have knowledge of the campus and parking spots most students wouldn't know about.

Inside the Boundary
Average students that ride their scooters to popular parts of campus at normal hours can't find parking spots due to a lack of spaces.

Outside the Boundary
Students with scooters that have knowledge of hidden parking spaces, don't care for consequences of parking in prohibited parking spaces, or go on campus at unusual hours are able to find parking spaces.

Solving the Problem

My solution is for the University of Florida Scooter and car parking situation around the western side of the campus. It is a known issue that there is insufficient university parking in this area and additional spots would be very valuable to the university and its students. I know that there is an empty lot near Library West and if acquired I would offer the university the use of the land so that students would have a place to park in such a useful location. This would be a valuable service the university could offer it's student in providing a place to park their vehicles and I believe they would be willing to pay for the use of the land. This partnership would not only help reduce stress on students but also bring more attention to a very nice side of the campus and encourage more involvement on campus. It would be very valuable to the student body and Gainesville community in general.

Testing the Hypothesis

1) The opportunity I chose to pursue is the scooter parking issue on the University of Florida Campus.

2) University of Florida are unable to find parking for their scooters on campus due to a lack of designated parking spaces.

  • The who: University of Florida students
  • The what: not being able to find scooter parking
  • The why: lack of parking spots
3)
  • Testing the who: This issue is very important for students, however, it doesn't exactly apply to anybody else. It is also limited to the students that own and use scooters.
  • Testing the what: The issue is seems to affect some areas much more than others. In some parts of the campus this is hardly an issue while in others it is almost impossible to ever find a spot.
  • Testing the why: This problem has been described as one of the main reasons a lot of people are late to class and leading people to avoid some parts of the campus. Some people end up using just about any other form of transportation over their scooter due to the parking situation.
4) I went around different locations of the campus to interview individuals on the topic I find to be so troubling and the responses were for the most part what I had expected. The very small scooter parking lot along the side of Library West  is a very congested area when it comes to parking and that is where I was able to speak to both Aby and Raul. I asked Aby how she felt about the parking situation by Library West and if it should be changed. She responded by explaining how aggravating it is to try to find a spot and how she many times has to park in spots that aren't designated for parking. She expressed that a change would be amazing but had been set on the idea that the University didn't care about the issue. When I spoke to Raul he said he lives near by and so he tries to walk there as much as possible due to the difficulty of finding parking. After this I chose to find a new location so I went to Turlington Plaza to question a different crowd. I spoke to a guy named Jeffery who told me he had a scooter that he hadn't used in months because trying to find parking on campus was useless. After class in the physics building I spoke to my classmate Jess and she told me that taking the scooter to class was by far the most convenient way of getting there and that the parking situation never caused her any problems. This surprised me but I had also noted that traffic wasn't nearly as bad on that side of campus. After this I chose to go a bit farther and asked around Southwest Gym. Here I met a kid by the name of Akash who was standing over a scooter with a boot strapped to it. He told me that there had been many occasions where he couldn't find a spot and would simply park illegally so he could make it to class on time. This led to so many tickets that the UF police department finally put a boot on his scooter.

5) Through the different interviews I began to understand that the issue is much more prominent in certain areas of the campus. It did appear that some areas, such as Library West and Southwest Gym, needed much better parking layouts, yet areas such as around the Physics building were very well situated.

Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Two Economic Opportunities

1. Paid Leave Bills Introduced in Congress
a. Source: https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7671-regulatory-issues-changes.html
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: Bills to make paid leave mandatory at jobs have been introduced into congress providing the opportunity of more comfortable work places and minimizing stress on workers.
c. Prototypical customer: Any worker in the United States
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This would be a nation-wide law being passed so I wouldn't necessarily be easy to achieve, however, the bill has already been introduced so there is momentum in a positive direction.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: I have seen my mom have to deal with this issue and miss important family events due to not being offered paid leave. If this opportunity were achieve I know that this would be much easier on her and she would feel more comfortable at her job.

2. Offering a Course on Managing Personal Finances
 a. Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/05/northwestern-mutual-how-many-americans-say-theyll-always-be-in-debt.html
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: This article describes how currently more than one in ten Americans say they will be debt for the rest of their lives. It isn't entirely the case but a portion of this reflects the way some Americans handle their personal finances. This lack of knowledge could be fixed with a course that teaches individuals how to as responsible as possible with how they are managing the way they spend money.
c. Prototypical customer: The prototypical customer would be any American interested in how to responsibly manage their funds.
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This would require the necessary knowledge to teach these individuals, which I currently do not have. This would make it very difficult for myself if I were to be working on this alone.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: As a student I haven't had the opportunity to learn about some very important financial topics such as loans and running my own budget. While it doesn't directly affect me now I know that it will eventually be very important yet I don't feel prepared at all. A course would definitely be useful to me.

Two Regulatory Opportunities

1. Increase of Visitors in Gainesville
 a. Source: http://news.ufl.edu/articles/2018/09/uf-rises-to-no-8-in-us-news-list-of-best-public-universities.php
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: This appears to me as an opportunity because with the University of Florida rising in ranks in this manner I can assume that it will lead to more nation-wide attention on the school meaning more people visiting Gainesville. Keeping that in mind it could potentially mean a need for a place to stay.
c. Prototypical customer: A prototypical customer would be any incoming families and potential students visiting Gainesville for a tour.
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? It would be a lot of work due to finding the land and having the initial funds to invest in the opportunity, however, I believe the payoff could make it worth it.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: As a current student in Gainesville I can see the improvements occurring not only in the school but also this town as well. This will certainly bring more attention and potentially more people.

2. Marijuana Business Opportunity
a. Source: https://mjbizdaily.com/us-cannabis-listings-in-canada-rise-as-investor-interest-spikes/
b. Why I think there is an opportunity: The use of marijuana has been gaining a lot of attention and this article describes an increase in investors due to the possibility of nation-wide legalization. Whether for medical or recreational use, the canabis industry is a great opportunity to be involved in in case it did become available.
c. Prototypical customer: Any citizen looking to use marijuana
d. Easy or difficult to exploit? Why? This requires laws to be passed in Florida to legalize marijuana making this a difficult opportunity to exploit.
e. Why I saw this as an opportunity: I have witnessed people using this substance illegally and have also seen people legally use it for medical use which shows me that there is a demand for it in a wide group of people. It has also been getting a lot of attention and seems to be moving towards legalization across the country.

Identifying Local Opportunities

1. Public money wasted on unnecessary water projects
[ https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E6367066C52008 ]

This article describes how Florida rivers and lakes are drying up due to humans excessively  collecting and using up the supply. It talks about how all the rain that has been falling in Gainesville and other parts of Florida should be replenishing these depleted areas however it is just encouraging more consumption. Unnecessary water supply projects are being implemented to further draw out more water from areas that can't afford to lose the desired amounts. This is an issue that would affect wildlife all over Florida and end up harming all residents in this state.

2. Police looking for pizza robbery suspects
[ https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E63670354E4550 ]

This article described an instance where a pizza driver was faced with a difficult situation in which he was forced to give up to pizzas and was asked for money. It describes this risk that all delivery drivers due to not knowing who they are delivering to. This is problem that puts hardworking drivers at risk of violence and theft.

3.Law can’t keep up with scooters
[ https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E6B14324745DF0 ]

This article describes the trend of dock-less scooters in cities across the nation and the potential they have in places that could use more environmentally-efficient forms of transportation. The issue described is how politicians in places such as San Francisco have banned this form of transportation. This is a problem that could affect not only the company owners but also residents in cities all over the world.

4. Silence won’t end Catholic crisis
[ https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E60F1A0259E208 ]

This article discusses the accusations of sexual abuse of various important catholic figures and the pope's claim that silence and prayer is the best way to deal with the problem. Many people are troubled by the call to silence and believe it isn't the way to go about the problem. This is an issue that affects the image of all Catholics and the Catholic church itself.

5. Too much secrecy keeps public in dark
[ https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E4B356F8E19988 ]

This article talks about how United States government officials are keeping too many secrets and concerned citizens are worried about how much they can trust these leaders.  There is a  lot of classified information that millions of Americans don't have the ability to see and it is inspiring a lot of people to fight to limit this possibility. This is something that affects all Americans and the way they view their leaders.

Opportunity Belief

I have been a student at the University of Florida for almost two and a half years now and one of the prominent issues many students talk about is parking. This is a large problem for many students but could also be seen as a great opportunity. It is something that demands a solution and the possibility for change is not far.

I personally have dealt with the issue of trying to find scooter parking on the University of Florida campus and with all of the surrounding open land around the campus I believe there is a great opportunity in attempting to solve this issue. This is something that affects all of the University of Florida students that drive scooters and is an issue that has always existed. Adding more scooter parking spaces would greatly improve the campus yet no one is doing anything about it. At this point I am about 70% sure that this opportunity exists.

The prototypical customer would be a University of Florida student who owns a scooter and parks on campus regularly.

While going into a discussion class a girl I knew had a scooter came in a little late. I figured It might have had something to do with the parking situation so I decided to discuss the topic with her. I asked her why she had been late and to my speculation she blamed it on not being able to find a parking spot. I expressed that she wasn't the only one that had the same problem. I asked her how she felt about a scenario where there were more parking spaces available and she described how much less stress she'd feel before each class and going on campus in general. I then asked how long she'd felt this way and she told me that this had been going on ever since she bought the scooter her first semester of college. She said it had been a problem ever since she first tried finding parking near her first class.

Two days later I was driving my scooter to the library and saw a guy sitting on his scooter in a parking spot just looking through phone very casually. I figured this might be a different, more-relaxed person to discuss it with. I told him I would like to discuss scooter parking with him for a class and he seemed reluctant but agreed. I asked if he felt that scooter parking was an issue and he told me that he almost always finds parking because he knows the right places to park. I asked if he felt that more parking wouldn't benefit the campus and he told me that it definitely would but that it didn't seem like such a big deal. After the last girl I was surprised so I asked if he had ever had an issue finding a parking space. He answered that his older brother went to the university and had a scooter so he always knew to leave early enough to be able to find one. He expressed that if anything it made sure he'd leave in time to make it for class.

The next person I spoke to was a friends who had just recently bought a scooter at the beginning of the semester. I asked if he has had any problems with parking and he told me that the first week of classes he had a terrible time finding parking but he was starting to get used to it. I asked if more parking spots would help and he said it would definitely make it easier for new students and other new scooter drivers to be comfortable on campus. He seemed very enthusiastic about the possibility of new parking on campus and he continued to describe how bad the first week was with making it to class on time and the two tickets he had gotten for parking in the wrong place.

After talking to these three people I was able to gather some information on how serious the problem really was. It seemed like everyone encouraged more parking spaces but the second guy I spoke to expressed that the issue might not be that urgent of a problem which genuinely surprised me. The third person and first person expressed the how the issue has affected them in negative ways and were very eager for more parking.

After speaking to all of these people my opinion did change a bit. I still believe that the original opportunity is still there and would help a lot of student across the entire campus. I believe that the original opportunity is still accurate and that little should be changed, however, I do believe that speaking to potential customers really helped me understand the opportunity much more. I believe that entrepreneurs should consistently be trying to explore more and more about their opportunities and products. Through this they should keep their main goal in mind while still adapting to any changes.

My Entrepreneurship Story

I was once visiting a music store looking over the different array of guitar pedals when a man approached me. He looked to be around 25 years old and started talking to me about the company he had started up. He explained how he had purchased a large sum of different pedals and created a company in which individuals could pay a monthly fee and rent out a different pedal every month. He explained how great yet how difficult it was being self employed. He began with only 10 subscribers and now has thousands. I have attached a picture of the founder and the name of his company below. I understood that it was not easy but to me the idea of working with something I was so passionate about seemed amazing. I took this course to gain a better understanding of the type of mentality necessary to succeed as an entrepreneur. My goal is to hopefully own my own company one day in which I can make instruments more accessible to poorer areas around the world.

Bugs

1. At night I always find myself freezing cold and having to tightly wrap myself under the covers

a. This is because the A/C unit in my room points directly at my bed

2. Every morning the garbage truck wakes me up around 6:00 A.M.

a. The garbage pick-up route is set to passes by my apartment every day at that time

3. Whenever I go to the UF gym I find myself waiting to use almost every machine

a. The gym is too small and overcrowds with the large amount of students

4. The left side speaker on my sound system has a constant buzzing whenever there isn’t any music playing

a. The speaker appears to be blown out or poorly plugged in

5. Whenever I’m going down 15th to get to class there is one light where I consistently am forced to wait for over 15 minutes, often making me late to class

a. The road goes from three lanes to one causing a lot of traffic to pile up.

6. Whenever I go to dry my clothes at the communal washing machine in my apartment complex the dryer requires almost two full cycles to ever completely dry my clothes

a. It appears to be a very old, outdated drying machine.

7. From my desk where I do homework I have a view of a building with a light bulb that is always flickering, and I find it very distracting

a. It is a very old looking building that appears to have close to no maintenance.

8. I have an iPhone 6 and it often dies with around 60% battery.

a. I have had this phone for years and the battery clearly appears to be worn out.

9. My next-door neighbors keep me up almost every night with incredibly loud music.

a. They own an incredibly large sub woofer and the walls in my complex are rather thin.

10. I often receive calls during class causing the ringer to go off and distracting everyone.

a. My phone has sand stuck in it which prevents me from turning the ringer off.

11. I frequently visit Patticakes coffee shop in downtown Gainesville and whenever I go to park I spend minimum five minutes looking for parking.

a. There are no parking spots for Patticakes itself and the nearest ones are across the park where the coffee shop is located.

12. Many times, when I take my scooter to the library I struggle finding any parking at all.

a. There is a very small amount of parking spots for scooters on campus.

13. My iPhone often takes over five minutes to open newer applications.

a. I have an iPhone 6 and the newer applications are designed for newer models of iPhones.

14. I have a very difficult time understanding my Calculus 3 professor and it many times takes its toll on my notes in class.

a. He was born in the Netherlands and only recently moved to the United States, so his accent is very strong.

15. My scooter usually takes several minutes and a lot of effort to finally start it up.

a. It is an old scooter and could use some maintenance.

16. My laptop randomly shuts off whenever I move it around too much.

a. The clip that holds in the battery came undone so whenever the back moves the battery comes out causing the computer to shut off.

17. I share a bathroom with four other people and there are always clothes left on the floor by one of my roommates from after the shower.

a. My three other roommates are very messy and nearly ever clean up after themselves

18. I can rarely ever find parking on the street whenever I get home at any point after 11:00PM.

a. The street parking in Gainesville is very limited and fills up very quickly.

19. My alarm clock will many times just ring out of nowhere and it bothers a lot of my roommates whenever I’m not there.

a. The alarm was dropped very hard once and has been damaged ever since.

20. Whenever I ride my scooter after it’s rained my pants get completely wet.

a. The cushion is made of an absorbent material and my scooter is always parked outside.

I found this experience to be very interesting because it made me think of minor issues that I would typically just ignore. By writing them down I can gather the issues I can fix and others I can try to avoid. I found it to be a very pleasant assignment that overall would help improve everyday problems.
